Reflection Prompt: How has your knowledge of technology standards changed after this module? Reflect on your own use of technology standards in your classroom and personal use.
Description: The NETS-S, NETS-T, and NETS-A are a framework for all educators in the digital age as we more fully implement technology into the classroom and school setting. The ISTE TF/TL standards take the NETS standards to a higher and deeper level. These standards were designed to give technological university programs a basis for their teaching and learning, as well as provide a framework for technology facilitators and leaders to guide educators in properly using technology. After reading these standards I realize that I have met many of the student, teacher, and even some of the technology facilitator standards. Ways I have met these standards in my classroom and school are:
Student created PowerPoint and Word documents
Online math fact program tailored to student achievement and needs (xtramath.org)
E-book leveled reading program – researched and piloted this program, introduced and instructed peers in implementing the program in our district during teacher in-service (raz-kids.com)
Implementing an iPod as a reading tool
Implementing an iPad in numerous subject areas in my classroom
Designing classroom curriculum for use on my Promethean board
Modeling and instructing peers in my school district ways in which to implement lessons and tools for Promethean boards during specific professional development times
Attending professional development sessions to better learn how to implement technology into my classroom
Impact: Standards exist in everything. The NETS-S, NETS-T, NETS-A, and the ISTE TF/TL standards has opened my mind to a new way of thinking about technology in education. For several years I have implemented technology in my classroom not because I was meeting standards, but because I was trying to reach the students of the digital age. I now believe that these two things go hand in hand. Because the generation of student’s in our schools are so enthralled with anything digital, we as educators have to learn the best way to implement digital tools into every part of the curriculum. This is why the standards were created; to give a framework for teachers to use in implementing technology. Implementing technology should not be a haphazard thing that is just thrown into the curriculum. Instead, teachers need to decide the purpose for the technology they are going to use, aligned with both the curriculum standard and the technology standard.
Intent: In my teaching I have always used the state standards as a guide in my instruction. As I begin to learn about these technology standards, I will continue to implement technology into my classroom in various forms. However, now I will use the standards for students and teachers as a framework in deciding the best technological method of practice and instruction for my students. On page 21 of the ISTE TF/TL book it states that “technology is a curriculum tool.” I plan to continue to integrate technology into my curriculum, by first identifying the needs of my students, refer to the technology standards for teachers and students, and then choose the technology activity that I will use. I will continue to implement technology in my classroom along with core academic content, however now I will refer to the NETS-S and NETS-T to more effectively plan and use technology in the classroom. One of the NETS-T weaknesses in my classroom is collaborating with parents and community members using digital tools and resources to support student success and innovation (ISTE NETS pg. 9). This week I plan to set up a classroom blog in which parents and community members can view classroom learning experiences, upcoming events, and pictures of students working in the classroom. Through this blog parents and community members will be able to post comments and questions about our classroom. After the blog has been created I plan to write an introduction letter to send home in student's folders as well as post it on the blog. In this letter I will state how to locate the blog, proper blog uses for the teacher, students, and parents, and ask for a permission form to be signed by parents so that student pictures may be to be posted on the blog. This will also help strength the standard of promoting and modeling digital citizenship and responsibility (ISTE NETS pg. 9). In the future I would like to train my students to use the blog in the classroom as a writing publishing tool.
